Transcript of Remarks by Special Representative of the Secretary-General Tayé-Brook Zerihoun following the meeting of Cyprus leaders
United Nations Protected Area, Nicosia, 5 March 2009
Good Afternoon. To start the meeting, the leaders had a one and half hour tête-à-tête. After that they continued discussion on property issues. They have now referred the matter to the representatives to consider, in tandem with other issues including governance and confidence building measures. As has been previously announced, they will now move to EU matters, next Wednesday, 11 March. The representatives will also meet in the afternoon of 12 March to discuss a range of issues which are on their agenda.
Question: [part of the question was inaudible] made any progress on the property issue?
Answer: Well, that’s a difficult judgment to make. But as you will recall they started with exchanging views on the principles that should guide the discussions. Following that they talked about the criteria and also discussed in this last meeting and the one before it specific suggestions and proposals from each side. There has been a broad and a substantive discussion on the issue. But I would not make that judgment because it would be a subjective judgment.
